Twitter helps you with people whom you can follow based on your interests defined in the beginning. But the real game begins when you start following people who can give you that extra push. Let’s see how to do it.
Find people from your industry (In our case – self-published authors).
Check the following:
a.      How many followers they have?
b.      How many people they follow?
c.       How many times they tweet in a day?
This will help you understand their reach.
d.     Do they mentions their followers in their tweets by their twitter handles?
e.     Do they retweet a lot?
f.      Do they like tweets a lot?
g.     Do they promote other people’s work?
h.     Are they real people and not some automated bots?
i.      Do they do this for free (And not charge $10 for tweeting your books)?

If the answer to the above questions is a singular YES then follow them at all costs.
Also, what you expect others to do, you have to do it yourself. So, mention your followers by their handles, Appreciate their work if you like it (Don’t be jealous). Like and Retweet when possible. Promote others (They will promote you in return). Do it as a real person. Do it for free.

Check at the bottom of this article for some useful tools on how to manage your followers and keep the conversations flowing.

Where not to go in search of followers.

  1. Do not buy followers. It will only give you numbers to boast about but will not help you sell your book or improve your website ranking.
  2. Do not pay money for automated tweets. Plenty of free tools do it for free and gives you amazing return on your time.

How to feed your followers and keep the conversation going.

The best way for me is quoted retweets. Someone had posted something that you like and would like your followers to see. Do it in the following way.
1. Use your words while retweeting, mentioning the best thing your liked about the tweet – Like “Interesting info. Thanks @twitterhandle (The person who shared it) for sharing” or “Just what I was thinking. Thanks @twitterhandle”

2. Use the name of the person (His twitter handle) who created the original tweet in your retweet. This helps in giving credit where it is due and also connecting with the person at a more personal level.

3. If you created something or have written something. Then find followers who would appreciate such info and use their handles to ask them for sharing it or their opinions.

I have done all this multiple times and got a lot of retweets and impressions along with lot of goodwill too.

The technology can help you

So this is the bottom of this article where I will tell you about some useful tools on how to manage your followers and keep the conversations flowing:

Additional integrations are available via Hootsuite’s App Directory, including MailChimp, Reddit, Storify, Tumblr, and Marketo.

Tweetdeck: TweetDeck consists of a series of customisable columns, which can be set up to display the user's Twitter timeline, mentions, direct messages, lists, trends, favourites, search results, hashtags, or all tweets by or to a single user. The client uses Twitter's own automatic and invisible URL shortening whereby a link of any length will only use 23 characters of a Tweet's 140-character limit. All columns can be filtered to include or exclude words or tweets from users. Tweets can be sent immediately or scheduled for later delivery.

Crowdfire: This is your marketing sidekick. It connects and analyses all your accounts. It monitors your accounts in real-time and figures exactly how you can grow. Also you can use it send automated direct messages when someone follows you.

So this is what you have to do to get that steady stream of followers and traffic to your website. Simple. Right!
